MG Motor India is gearing up to launch its latest offering, the Comet EV, on April 26, 2023. The launch will initially only reveal the starting price, with the full range prices to be announced in May 2023. The Comet EV is a compact two-door electric vehicle that will compete with the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3, and is aimed at buyers looking for a small footprint urban runabout.

Platform and Power
The MG Comet EV is built on the Wuling Air EV platform that is based on parent company SAIC’s GSEV platform. This platform will also be used for the EV SUV version of the Comet, the Baojun Yep SUV, set to hit the market in India in 2025. The Comet EV is shorter and narrower than its direct rival, the Tiago EV, and will have a wheelbase of 2010mm. While the battery capacity of the Comet EV has not been officially announced by MG, it is expected to be around 20kWh, with a claimed driving range of over 200km on a single charge.

Design and interiors

The Comet EV was recently showcased in production form, featuring unique exterior packages and quirky colour shades. It also boasts a futuristic design with a two-spoke steering wheel, a strict four-seater layout, and a dual 10.25-inch infotainment screen layout, a first for a mass-market EV. Other notable features of the Comet EV’s interior include connected car tech, electric parking brake, hill-start assist, keyless entry and go, drive modes, and voice commands.

Pricing

The MG Comet EV is expected to be priced between Rs 10 lakh and 12 lakh (ex-showroom) with over 60 percent localization in it’s manufacturing to keep the price competitive. The company plans to target buyers looking for a small EV with a unique design, and we can expect the Comet EV to make a significant impact in the EV market upon its launch.
