Tata Motors, has unveiled ambitious plans to equip 50% of its workforce with cutting-edge auto tech capabilities within the next five years. In a significant investment towards this goal, the company dedicated over ₹25 crore to training initiatives last year, underscoring its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in the automotive industry.
During the fiscal year 2023, Tata Motors directed more than 340,000 hours towards specialized training programs. These initiatives encompassed a range of areas, including higher education for shop floor technicians, digital transformation, e-learning, and the transition of mechanics to auto electronics.
Sitaram Kandi, Vice President of HR at Tata Motors, highlighted the critical need for skilled talent within the automotive sector. “Universities have initiated courses to address this need, but there remains a significant shortage of talent across the industry,” Kandi stated. “To tackle this challenge, Tata Motors is collaborating with technology partners and academic institutions to develop tailor-made training programs. Our nationwide ‘learn and earn’ apprenticeship initiative, coupled with a strong focus on diversity and inclusion, aims to cultivate a capable and future-ready workforce.”
Tata Motors’ apprenticeship program focuses on imparting in-demand skills such as mechatronics, IoT, robotics, and AI through hands-on training. Utilizing an innovative ‘Learn & Earn’ model, the program provides training to students with backgrounds in ITI/12th pass, empowering them with specific skill sets essential for the evolving automotive landscape.
The company reported that more than 13,000 students are currently enrolled in the apprenticeship program, with over 88% of successful graduates employed by channel partners. Notably, the participation of women in the program has witnessed a significant increase, quadrupling from FY22 to FY24.
Following the acquisition of the Ford India facility in Sanand, Tata Motors has collaborated with a university to upskill 100% of the newly onboarded workforce. The courses, initiated in February 2023, are currently being pursued by over 820 employees, reflecting the company’s commitment to investing in the continuous development of its talent pool.
