In line with its goal of becoming a climate-neutral company by 2040, Volvo Group continues to push sustainability initiatives, including a stronger focus on sourcing fossil-free components from its supply chain partners in India. After initiating the use of fossil-free castings in 2022, Volvo Group is now expanding this effort to encompass additional vehicle components. These initiatives, supported by Volvo’s Indian partners, are set to reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 13,000 tons annually.
Volvo Group’s recent collaborations with two major Chennai-based suppliers, Rane (Madras) Ltd and Madras Engineering Industries Private Limited (MEI), mark significant milestones in this journey toward sustainability.
Rane (Madras) Ltd has played a pivotal role in the development of fossil-free tie rods and linkages for Volvo trucks. Manufactured entirely using renewable energy, these critical steering components are made without fossil fuels or harmful materials. The innovative process incorporates fossil-free steel and relies on electric vehicles for material transport, ensuring an environmentally friendly supply chain. This development is expected to reduce 600 tons of CO2 emissions annually for Volvo, with potential savings increasing if the concept is scaled to other suppliers.
Madras Engineering Industries Private Limited (MEI) has worked with Volvo Group to create fossil-free ferrous castings, essential for vehicle durability. These castings are produced from 100% renewable energy and are entirely composed of recycled metallic scrap, eliminating the need for virgin materials. The production process is also landfill-free and uses no toxic substances, resulting in fully recyclable components. This innovation could cut emissions by 12,400 tons of CO2 annually for Volvo, with industry-wide benefits if adopted further.
The introduction of these components from Rane Madras and MEI is scheduled for Q1 2025, and both products have received certifications from the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Green Products & Services Council. These GreenCO and GreenPro certifications confirm the components’ adherence to stringent global sustainability standards, positioning Volvo Group as a leader in eco-friendly automotive practices.
