UltraTech Cement Scales Up EV Truck Deployment in Logistics Operations

UltraTech Cement Limited, India’s largest cement and ready-mix concrete company, is set to deploy 100 additional Electric Vehicles (EV trucks) in its logistics operations, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and emissions reduction.

Sustainable Logistics Initiative

The newly signed transport service contract will facilitate the transportation of 75,000 MT of clinker per month over a 400-km roundtrip from its Dhar Cement Works in Madhya Pradesh to its Dhule Cement Works in Maharashtra. This initiative makes UltraTech the first cement company in India to deploy electric trucks at this scale for such long-haul routes.

Environmental Impact

By replacing fossil-fuel-based trucks with EV trucks, UltraTech estimates a reduction of 17,000 MT of CO2 emissions annually. This milestone aligns with the company’s Net Zero by 2050 target and highlights its focus on green logistics.

Leadership Vision

Mr. K. C. Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement, emphasized:
“UltraTech is fully committed to realizing its Net Zero goal by 2050. Scaling up EV trucks in our logistics operations underscores our holistic approach to integrating sustainability in our business conduct.”

Scaling Up Post-Pilot Success

The decision follows a successful pilot initiated in January 2024, where UltraTech introduced five electric trucks for clinker transport on the same route. The pilot included establishing charging infrastructure and training drivers, ensuring a seamless transition to electric logistics.

UltraTech is now evaluating additional routes for EV truck deployment and plans to conduct a similar pilot for transport between other manufacturing units.

Future Roadmap

  • 500 EV Trucks: UltraTech aims to deploy 500 electric trucks by June 2025, contributing to the Government of India’s eFAST initiative.
  • Green Logistics History: UltraTech introduced CNG vehicles in 2021, LNG vehicles in 2022, and Electric Trucks in 2024.
  • Current Green Fleet: The company operates 468 CNG trucks and 67 LNG trucks, transporting materials across its manufacturing units.

By scaling up EV truck deployment, UltraTech Cement demonstrates industry leadership in sustainable logistics, paving the way for significant emissions reductions and aligning with India’s decarbonization goals.
